Big Sister Magazine was created to be a voice that represents the clan of the curvy and plus size women African women. As part of our mission, which is to support various projects for the plus size women, celebrating their worth, brain, talent, beauty and self esteem. Big Sister Magazine who is already in partnership with International Fuller Woman Network in U.S.A. has forged an exciting new partnership with Miss Big World, Nigeria.

Miss Big World, a pageant whose mission represents that of the full figured women of the world in an uplifting positive manner, showing confidence & beauty in all settings of life. This year’s edition comes up on the 6th of November, 2011 @ Sheraton Hotel, Abuja.
Big Sister Magazine is excited about our partnership as we share similar goals and objectives. We will give our numerous fans updates on the event as well as do a special feature on the winner. Copies of Big Sister Magazine will also be available at the event.

In a recent interview, the founder and organizer of the Miss Big World pageant Dr. Olubunmi Usim-Wilson tells BIG SISTER Magazine more about the event.
Excerpts:

Tell us briefly about yourself madam?

I am Dr Olubunmi Usim-Wilson, a Human Right Activist and Politician, a Businesswoman and a Mother. I was born in Lagos and did my elementary and Secondary schooling in Lagos as well before going for my degree AS, BA, Masters and Ph.d in the United States. I will describe myself as a God-Fearing person;  everything I do in life is God motivated and for God!

What inspired you into the MISS BIG WORLD pageant?

Miss Big World was born out of the realization that ladies with plus-sizes seem to be stigmatized where public appearances are concerned. The society silently relegates big ladies to the background in a lot of things. Beauty Pageants are all about the slim ones, beach parties are all about the slim ones, Modeling, Acting etc is about ‘Lepas’ as their called. Being Big myself, I felt challenged and decided to encourage ladies like me to show some pride in their sizes! Big is beautiful and you can proudly flaunt it!

How long have you been into the pageant?
Five years now. The 2011 edition will be the 5th.

How has the response been so far from the plus size community?

We have produced four queens and they have each in their own tenure been able to attract ladies like them to be bolder in the society. They make such public appearances and socialize freely that people are forced to notice, admire and respect them. Slow as the response may seem I can assure you the message is out and it will be louder at each event.

What are your challenges so far?

Funds! We are short on support and sponsorship. But we are getting by ourselves.

How do you get the funds to run a pageant as this?

God is the number one provider. The entire program gets its biggest funding from other business interests that I have.

Tell us about the high lights and expectations for the 2011 edition of Miss Big World?

A car as the star prize, hopefully. Highlights of this year’s edition are, the girls will be in camp for seven days in which they will get counseling for social improvement, business tips and ideas, career guidance and beauty tips from experts in the various fields. They will get to meet celebrities, Great Musical talents in the country and ultimately the First Lady; Dame Patience Goodluck Jonathan who is a lady with plus-size too. They will also visit all television stations in Abuja.

We wish you the best of luck madam.

Thank you so much.
